Tom Noonan, was 5 months behind on his mortgage, had maxed out 37 Visa credit cards for cash advances to pay for business expenses and had used all the personal cash he had for his internet security company. With a wife and three kids at home, he felt he had a virus in his head.
Just a few years earlier in the 1990’s, at the start of his company the CEO of a large tech firm in California wanted him to serve on their executive team. He sent the CEO an email to tell him no, I’m starting an internet security company. The CEO replied “That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard. If you ever get any money in that company I’ll come to Atlanta and drink champagne from a prostitute’s shoe.”

How did the Cleveland Cavaliers become the first basketball team in history to win the NBA National Championship after losing three games? Was it because LeBron James and his team were better players than Steph Curry and his team. Of course not, with both teams having won 3 games each, the seventh game could have gone either way. I believe it was because, the Cavaliers had a “Bad Enough Want To”.

My friend Jonathan got offended when his boss falsely accused him of cheating on his expense report. He was so full of rage that he quit his job on the spot, not thinking about his non-working pregnant wife and financial obligations at home. It took him eight months to find a comparable job.

On a flight to Dallas on Southwest Airlines, I observed an off duty flight attendant, who was on personal travel, assist a passenger in opening a stuck luggage compartment. No one knew she worked for Southwest until she identified herself. I certainly was impressed and I'm sure other passengers were too with this attendants willingness to go the extra mile in her off time.
How do you motivate your employees to do work that is not necessarily required of them? One strategy is to help each team member feel that what they do makes a difference to your organization and to others. Studies have shown that when employees know that their work efforts are making an impact, it gives them a sense of satisfaction and a desire to perform at a higher level.
